Workshop: Mindfulness for improv

What it's about

In the Radical Present improv workshop, you’ll learn to quiet the inner critic and sharpen your awareness to become a more responsive, grounded improvisor. This workshop taught by Jeremy West is designed to help you move away from "inventing" jokes and toward "discovering" the gold already right in front of you. Through mindfulness-based exercises, you’ll develop the attentional muscle needed to catch every subtle offer your partner makes. You'll explore how to slow down, breathe, and trust that the best ideas come from being fully awake to the here and now. No matter what type of improv format you're navigating, these techniques will provide the calm and clarity to react with truth and spontaneity. In this workshop, you will learn how to: • train your attention to stay grounded and focused in scenes. • drop your "script" instantly when a partner provides a new, unexpected offer. • use your physical body as a compass for authentic emotional reactions. • master the "gap" between lines to ensure you are truly listening, not just waiting to speak. Through carefully crafted exercises and expert side-coaching, you’ll build instincts that help your scenes feel effortless and alive. Through explorative exercises, you will learn to see every object, character, and line of dialogue with fresh eyes. This workshop provides the tools to stop overthinking and start experiencing the joy of total presence on stage. Every moment on stage holds a hidden gift; you just have to be present enough to see it. IDEAL FOR Improvisers of all levels looking to stop overthinking, reduce performance anxiety, and deepen their connection with scene partners. WHAT WE'LL COVER • Attentional Flexibility—High-tempo drills to help you pivot the moment a scene changes. • Sensory Grounding—Techniques to use your environment and physical sensations to build richer worlds. • Non-Attachment—Letting go of "good ideas" to make room for "great moments". • At-Home Training—A specific set of 5-minute daily exercises to keep your attentional muscle strong between shows. PREREQUISITE You must have completed the Improv: Fun and Games course, OR have completed a multi-week level 1 course with a reputable improv company.
